Boil water with salt. Use about half a cup of salt per gallon of water. You can also add a tablespoon of vinegar.
Place the crabs (either alive or recently killed) in the boiling, salted water and cover the pot. There should be enough water so that the crab is completely submerged, plus an additional 2 or 3 inches.
Cook for about 15 minutes; slightly less for smaller ones, slightly more for large ones. The color will become red-orange. (When cooking live crab, you can also put it in the freezer for a few minutes beforehand so that it moves more slowly and is easier to handle when placing in the pot.)
